Holidays Easier for People with Hearing Impairment in Bass Coast and East Gippsland

20 January 2010

Two popular visitor destinations in Gippsland, Bass Coast and East Gippsland, are making the accommodation experience better for visitors to the region with Hospitality Kits for deaf and hard of hearing visitors.

Are you visiting or planning to visit or travel to Bass Coast - Phillip Island, Cowes, Wonthaggi. Inverloch?

Or, are you planning to visit East Gippsland - Bairnsdale, Lakes Entrance, Mallacoota, Metung, Omeo, Paynesville?

Do you or does someone you know have a hearing loss or are they deaf?

The Hospitality Kits are now available from the Visitor Information Centre in Bairnsdale, East Gippsland and the Phillip Island Visitor Information Centre, New Haven, Phillip Island.

The ‘Hospitality Kit for hotels, motels and all public venues’ contains a number of items that are highly valued by people who are deaf or hard of hearing that make their stay at a motel, hotel or Bed & Breakfast far easier and more comfortable.

The Kit includes a:
• Telephone Typewriter (TTY) that shows text conversations on a screen with Flashing Light alert,
• ‘Shake Awake’ vibrating alarm clock that is placed under the pillow;
• Flashing Light Door Bell and Amplified Ringer
• TV Listening Sennheiser system that enables a person to watch TV, or listen to the radio, without disturbing others with a high volume.

The Kit is very easy to use and comes with a simple step by step guide.

The Kit will be loaned to motels and other accommodation houses that host deaf and hard of hearing visitors through the regional Visitor Information Centres at Newhaven on Phillip Island, in Bass Coast, and from Bairnsdale Visitor Information centre in East Gippsland.

East Gippsland and Bass Coast Shire’s discussions with deaf access VICTORIA Gippsland had persuaded the Shires that the kits were highly valued by deaf and hard of hearing people and could make a significant contribution to tourism growth.

‘The Kit is a great resource for the traveling community, after all 1 in 6 Australians have some form of hearing loss, and, having access to such a resource shows that the needs these travelers is taken into consideration” said Leanne Wishart, deaf access VICTORIA Gippsland Regional Co-ordinator
