Vicdeaf - National Relay Service

NRS logoThe National Relay Services (NRS) is a Federal Government initiative which provides a telephone system for Deaf people and others with hearing or speech difficulties.

There are several ways in which the National Relay Service can help overcome a speech or hearing impairment when using the telephone. In most cases you will need what is known as a TTY or telephone typewriter. This is a telephone with a keyboard and a small display screen for text. It allows the user to type a message of conversation and to read what is being said in reply.

Vicdeaf hosts the Victorian Education and Information Officer (EIO) for the NRS.

The EIO can provide:

  • Individual training in use of service and TTY
  • Broader community awareness of NRS
  • Staff training and information
  • Information presentations to public and private sector
  • Feedback for congratulations and complaints
  • Advice and referral regarding telecommunications
