Over the years, there have been many times when Victoria and Tasmania have worked together to provide services to Tasmanian Deaf people. Beginning on 18 February 2008 Vicdeaf and TASDEAF will be working in partnership for a six month trial period demonstrating another positive alliance.
In late 2007, TASDEAF decided that their interpreter booking service would be operated by an external interpreting agency. After an extensive tendering process, Vicdeaf was chosen to assist TASDEAF. Vicdeaf is delighted to be working with TASDEAF. This means that Vicdeaf’s interpreter booking service, SLC VIC, will manage all of Tasmania’s interpreting bookings from Melbourne.
What does this mean for the Victorian community needing interpreters? Don’t worry! For bookings in Tasmania, SLC VIC will use the Tasmanian interpreters currently working for TASDEAF. Sometimes, Victorian interpreters will go to Tasmania, but this has already been happening on rare occasions over the past few years, as needed. For example for crucial events like conferences and court, if no Tasmanian interpreters are available a Victorian interpreter will fly down to cover the job.
Both Vicdeaf and TASDEAF are very aware of how important it is to have local context and knowledge. This is why SLC VIC will always aim to use the Tasmanian interpreters who already work for TASDEAF.
It is important to understand that this partnership is really about infrastructure. This partnership will allow TASDEAF to use Vicdeaf’s online booking system and its booking office staff. The Vicdeaf booking officers have extensive experience in the area of interpreting assignment management, booking 12,592 hours in 2007, the most ever recorded at Vicdeaf in a calendar year.
We look forward to this exciting new working relationship with TASDEAF and the opportunity to provide both the Deaf and hearing Tasmanian community, with access to our high quality service.
The Interpreting and Notetaking Service assists Deaf, hard of hearing and hearing people to communicate with each other by providing:
• Interpreting services between Australian Sign Language (Auslan) and English.
• Notetaking services at events in which Deaf and hearing impaired people are attending and where information will be shared. Notetakers are often booked for meetings, student lectures and tutorials.
• Deaf relay interpreting services where the relay interpreter repeats, or relays an Auslan message from one Deaf person to another. They do not work between spoken English and Auslan as do Auslan interpreters. Deaf relay interpreters are often used at meetings where Deafblind or Deaf people with vision impairments are in attendance. Most relay interpreters are Deaf.
