How to Become an Auslan Interpreter

Auslan interpreters assist in the communication between hearing, deaf and hard of hearing people. People interested in becoming an Auslan interpreter need to be fluent in both Auslan and English. There are many courses in Auslan, both full time and part time. Some of these include:

Vicdeaf
• Kangan Batman Institute of TAFE
• Various other TAFE colleges
La Trobe University
• Community centres

When you are fluent in Auslan you can apply to study RMIT's Diploma of Interpreting (Auslan). You will need to attend an entrance interview to be accepted into the course, which runs part time for one year.

To work as an Auslan interpreter you will need NAATI (National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters) accreditation as a Paraprofessional interpreter (previously Level 2). Accreditation is acquired by passing a NAATI examination - if you are enrolled in the Diploma of Interpreting you will sit the exam at the end of your year of study. If not, you can apply directly to NAATI to sit the examination. With further studies and an examination you can obtain accreditation as an Interpreter (previously Level 3).
