Vicdeaf - Geoff Fethers Education Fund

Geoff Fethers Education Fund

The Geoff Fethers Education Fund was established in 1985 to “Assist in the Tertiary Education of Deaf People”. The fund is administered by the board of management of the Victorian Deaf Society. Grants are given to encourage and enhance educational opportunity at Post-Secondary level for deaf people.

Application Form:      PDF         WORD

Guidelines:

The Grants may be made available, on an annual basis, for fees in relation to tuition, union fees, tutors, purchase of books and payment of notetakers/interpreters. The following items are specifically excluded- uniforms, fares or excursions.
However, priority will be given towards payment for interpreting and/or notetaking services.

Grants may be awarded to a number of successful applicants annually to be expended in the following year. Each successful applicant shall be required to furnish the Victorian Deaf Society with periodic reports and a statement of expenditure, preferably from the school, college or university.

Monies are allocated on the grounds that the course will be satisfactorily completed. If an applicant does not commence, or withdraws from a course, the Trustees may require all or part of the grant to be returned to the Trust. In general, the sum granted will be paid in two equal amounts.

Applications must be made on the official form (obtainable from the Victorian Deaf Society) and accompanied by a statement indicating the value of the course being undertaken in relation to the applicants career opportunities.

It must be shown how successful completion of the course will benefit the Deaf community in general.

All applications are to be considered on merit only. If no applications are satisfactory, then no award will be made for that year.

In the event of the Victorian Deaf Society deciding to award a fund that would not cover the full amount requested, the applicant needs to advise whether it would be acceptable.

Criteria:

  1. Applicants for grants should be presently enrolled in, or contemplating enrolment in, a Post-Secondary course/study
  2. The Course undertaken should be relevant to the applicants career prospects and potential
  3. Applicants should be those recognized by the Victorian Deaf Society as “deaf persons”
  4. The applicant must be a resident in the state of Victoria for at least 12 months
  5. The application should list purposes of the study to be undertaken and show the benefit of the study to the Deaf community in general.

Applications are to be marked for the attention of “The Geoff Fethers Education Fund” and forwarded no later than 31 October 2009 to:
