Vicdeaf -

Auslan

Auslan (Australian Sign language) is the language of the Australian Deaf Community. Vicdeaf offers three community courses which provide an opportunity to learn the basic skills of communicating with Deaf people, and to gain an understanding of their culture. These classes run in various locations around Melbourne, and some regional areas. Community Classes are offered in two main ways:

Term Classes:

Courses run for six weeks in different community centres around Melbourne and Regional Areas. Classes are in the evenings and generally run from 6 – 8pm. Timetable follows the school term.

Two – Day Classes:

These classes are held in East Melbourne and are often run over two Saturdays. The course runs for the same number of hours and covers the same curriculum as the term classes and is ideal for people who are not able to commit to weekly classes.
If you live in a rural area that we don’t currently offer classes this might be the perfect way to get started learning Auslan! Get a group together and we will bring a teacher to you! Contact us on auslan@vicdeaf.com.au

Auslan LOTE Program

Vicdeaf now offers an Auslan LOTE program for schools from prep to year 12. This program is consistent with VELS Standards and Progression Points.

The program aims to provide school children with an opportunity to learn a language that is used in their own community. Auslan (Australian Sign Language) is the language of the Australian Deaf community. Students will also learn about the culture of the Deaf community. Auslan provides students with excellent visual communication skills. Teachers are encouraged to get involved with the classes so that they are able to assist the students in retaining the language through the rest of the school week.

All teachers are proficient in Auslan and fully qualified. We can create a customized curriculum to meet the needs of your students. Please contact the office to discuss implementing Auslan as a LOTE at your school.
